Work Hours Calculator – Calculate daily work hours and earnings
The work hours calculator calculates how many hours you have worked in a day and optionally your daily earnings. Enter your start and end times and breaks, and you'll get an accurate calculation.
Why calculate work hours?
- Time reporting – Time sheets to send to clients or employers
- Overtime tracking – How many overtime hours did you get today?
- Freelancer billing – Calculate billable hours per client
- Payroll – Check your daily gross income from hourly wage
Calculating work hours
The time worked is calculated simply:
Time worked = End time – Start time – Breaks
If you work a night shift (for example, 10:00 PM–6:00 AM), activate the "Night shift" setting. This way, the calculator handles shifts that go past midnight correctly.
Breaks and labor law
Under the US Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA):
| Daily work time | Rest period |
|---|---|
| Over 6 hours | Right to 30 min break |
| Over 10 hours | Right to a second 30 min break |
Source: FLSA 1938
Overtime
In the US, regular working time is up to 8 hours per day and 40 hours per week. For hours exceeding this, overtime compensation must be paid:
- First 2 overtime hours: +50% to wage
- Thereafter: +100% to wage
