How to calculate your hourly wage

Hourly wage is calculated by dividing the monthly salary by the monthly working hours:

Hourly wage = Monthly salary Γ· (Weekly hours Γ— 52 Γ· 12)

For example, with a gross monthly salary of €3,200 and 37.5 h weekly working hours, the hourly wage is approximately €19.69/h.

Most common weekly working hours

Weekly working hours vary by industry and collective agreement. Here are the most common:

IndustryWeekly working hoursWorking hours/month
Office work (general)37.5 h162.5
Retail37.5 h162.5
Industry40 h173.3
Construction40 h173.3
Healthcare38.25 h165.75

Monthly working hours are obtained by the formula: weekly hours Γ— 52 weeks Γ· 12 months.

Gross or net?

The calculator works with both gross and net salary. Gross salary is the salary before taxes and side costs. Net salary is the take-home amount. When comparing salaries, e.g. in job search, always use gross salary β€” that's the figure stated in job advertisements and employment contracts.

When is knowing your hourly wage useful?

  • In salary negotiations β€” easier to compare different offers when you know the real hourly rate
  • Checking overtime compensation β€” overtime pay is calculated based on hourly wage (50% or 100% increase)
  • Freelancer pricing β€” if you switch from salaried work to entrepreneurship, your hourly wage gives a basis for pricing (remember to add side costs on top)
  • Comparing part-time work β€” is 20 h/week part-time really more profitable than full-time?
